We are here for you!

Students, would you like to improve your instrumentation skills while you are in dental hygiene school and for the clinical boards?  Whether you are taking the WREB, CRDTS, or another clinical examination for school or for your dental hygiene license to practice, I can work with you and give you suggestions on how to improve your skills! This will also be beneficial to prevent musculoskeletal injuries that can occur from repetitive motions.  

It’s important to “make every stroke count” when you are scaling. You will learn how to use both hands to scale to prevent the joints in your thumb and fingers from experiencing repetitive motion injuries, especially if you have flexibility in your thumb and fingers. It’s also important to avoid repetitive wrist rocking motions which can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.

By visually watching your scaling techniques on your typodont, I will make verbal suggestions and then demonstrate on my typodont for you to observe my recommendations.  I can then watch your practice on your typodont to suggest recommendations just as if we were in the clinic together for a tutoring session!

I have been teaching clinical dental hygiene for 30 years and have been able to identify strategies for improvement with scaling techniques and ergonomics. I wrote a book on protective instrumentation techniques entitled, Reinforced Periodontal Instrumentation and Ergonomics for the Dental Care Provider.” 

I have helped many dental hygiene students and dental hygienists learn how to practice without experience pain which then leads to career longevity. I have provided numerous lectures and hands-on workshops at dental hygiene schools, dental conferences, and dental hygiene societies in the USA and in Canada for over 10 years.  


Dental hygienists often experience pain or musculoskeletal disorders due to improper techniques, so If you are experiencing pain while practicing, I can make recommendations to enhance career enjoyment! Whatever your challenges are with scaling in any quadrant, I can help you!  Also, if you are experiencing pain in your neck, shoulders, back, hands or wrist, I can help you!

Q. How does this work?

Step 1: Sign up (assuming there are seats available - only 6 students per group)

Step 2: Get invited to our group sessions (1h per session), held once a week.

Step 3: Bring your typodont and instruments to the webinar and our faculty will walk you through "how to use each instrument in each quadrant." Our faculty will demonstrate, and watch you work on your instrumentation.

That's why we are taking only 6 students/group!

Get your answers via webinar: During the webinar, our faculty will answer your questions. We will make sure to bring explanations from trusted sources and scientific evidence.

The sessions are $99/month. You will learn how to work through all quadrants!

Q. Can I join anytime?

No, we start the program once a month. There are a limited number of seats available so that each student will get individualized support. If you missed this round, don't worry! We'll always remind by email when it's time to register for the next round.

Q. What if I don’t have StudentRDH yet?

That’s okay! This program is for anyone who wants extra help. 

Q. Is this for junior or senior students?

Tutoring is for anyone who wants to be successful. It does not matter if you are in your first semester or in your last semester. We can all learn from each others’ questions!

Q. How does payment work?

You will pay one time for the 4-week program. You may sign up again, but this is not a subscription.

Esteemed clinician, author, and educator

Diane Millar


Diane is an educator, author, clinician and international speaker. She has been speaking at dental conferences and meetings throughout the country and in Canada since 2013 providing lectures and hands-on workshops on advanced instrumentation techniques and postural ergonomics. She works with dental hygienists, dentists, and dental hygiene students to learn state-of-the-art scaling techniques that incorporate protective instrumentation strategies. These strategies have helped many dental professionals and students learn how to improve scaling skills and postural ergonomics which then lends to career longevity. Diane Millar, RDH, MA has been a dental hygienist since 1981. Her career has embraced working in private practice for 40 years coupled with teaching advanced instrumentation techniques at USC, Cerritos College, and currently at West Coast University in Anaheim, California. She is an international speaker, published author, and clinician. Diane currently teaches at West Coast University, tutors dental hygiene students online, and works as a Temp dental hygienist in Orange County, California. In 2007 she became a published author of a dental hygiene book entitled: Reinforced Periodontal Instrumentation and Ergonomics for the Dental Care Provider. She is also a California Dental Board CE provider. Her passion is to help dental hygienists and dental hygiene students learn about new innovative instrumentation techniques and ergonomics to enhance career longevity.
